Jason Sytsma is a registered patent attorney and senior vice president at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, P.L.C., one of Iowa’s most respected law firms, with a practice focused on intellectual property and information technology. He is a member of the firm’s intellectual property practice group and co-chair of its Startups & Innovators practice group.
Jason brings a rare combination of legal expertise and deep technical knowledge to his practice. With a background in electrical engineering and five years of experience in the automotive industry, he advises clients on the complex legal issues that arise when technology is commercialized — from the first patent application through licensing, enforcement, and portfolio strategy.

He handles the full trademark process — from clearance searches and filing through USPTO prosecution and registration — and has extensive experience resolving trademark infringement disputes, including domain name disputes through UDRP arbitration and litigation.
Technology & Internet Law
A significant portion of Jason’s practice involves software companies and internet businesses. He drafts and negotiates a broad range of technology agreements, including software licenses, SaaS agreements, eCommerce distribution and supplier agreements, terms of service, end-user license agreements, and open-source software compliance. Jason also advises clients on online infringement matters, including copyright enforcement through the DMCA and domain name disputes.
